Looking to escape the Front Range heat? Look no further than Steamboat Springs. Just a three-hour drive from Denver, it’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway with friends or family. Here’s our favorite way to spend a long summer weekend.
Arrive Thursday evening and settle in. While you won’t want to leave, plan to head home Sunday late afternoon or Monday morning so you can soak up every last bit of mountain time.
Steamboat offers plenty of affordable condos near Steamboat Resort, or splurge a little and stay downtown, where everything is within walking distance. Either way, getting around is easy thanks to Steamboat’s free bus system and condo shuttles.
Before you start planning meals, grab a Mythology Passport. It features Steamboat’s best restaurants, bars, craft cocktails, and local favorites, making it an easy way to discover the town while supporting local businesses.
Thursday & Friday
Steamboat is a fly fishing mecca. Book a guided trip with Great Divide Fly Fishing, Steamboat Flyfisher, or Yampa Valley Anglers to find the perfect stretch of water.
If you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday, don’t miss the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo. It’s a true western tradition that’s been entertaining locals and visitors alike for generations.
Friday afternoon, make your way to Mythology Distillery for Friday Oysters, beginning at 4 p.m. Art of the Shuck flies in fresh oysters every Friday morning and shucks them tableside while you enjoy award-winning craft cocktails, whiskey and make new friends.
If your visit lines up, check out the Steamboat Free Summer Concert Series at Howelsen Hill. These community concerts feature nationally touring artists and are one of the best ways to experience a summer evening in Steamboat.
Saturday
Start your morning at the Main Street Farmer’s Market, held downtown every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. With more than 150 vendors offering fresh produce, local food, artisan goods, and handcrafted products, it’s one of Colorado’s best farmers markets.
Steamboat has earned the nickname Bike Town USA, and for good reason. Ride the downhill trails at Steamboat Bike Park, explore Emerald Mountain’s 24 miles of singletrack, or enjoy a leisurely ride along the Yampa River Core Trail. If gravel riding is more your style, Routt County offers more than 600 miles of scenic dirt and gravel roads.
Traveling with kids? Spend the afternoon at Old Town Hot Springs, or drive about 30 minutes to the iconic Strawberry Park Hot Springs for a relaxing soak in naturally heated mineral pools surrounded by the forest.
Sunday
Before heading home, make time for Bluegrass Brunch at Mythology’s Whiskey Garden.
It’s one of Steamboat’s favorite Sunday traditions—a welcoming community gathering with live bluegrass, food from Yield Smash Co., handcrafted cocktails, frozen sloshies, local beer, whiskey, plenty of outdoor seating, and even slides for the kids. Whether you’re lingering over brunch with friends or enjoying one last cocktail before the drive home, it’s the perfect way to wrap up a weekend in the mountains.
Before you hit the road, take a stroll down Lincoln Avenue. Downtown Steamboat is filled with locally owned shops, galleries, outfitters, and coffee spots that make it easy to find a unique souvenir or simply enjoy the slower pace of mountain life. Shopping local is one of the best ways to support the businesses that make Steamboat such a special place—and you never know what you’ll discover along the way.
